Greetings, friends. This month I wrote about something we don’t have in our current pandemic times and which I miss very much: going to movies. Music Box Theatre, Chicago, IL The last time I saw a movie in a theater was March 8, 2020, almost four months ago. As movie experiences go, it was an astonishing and poignant one to serve as an unknowing end of an era:
I was trying to add a comment and ran into a snag, so the comment will now begin with a microcomplaint about substack.
I got the email with a link to this essay, followed it, read the essay, clicked the comment button, typed up a comment and was directed to a dialog to fill in my name and bio, which I did but was then challenged to login. As a result, since I was on my phone in the Gmail app, I had to back out to read the login email. So I lost that brilliantly crafted comment. That could by my bad if there was another way to do it on the phone. But I had assumed that the email link carried a token and that I was indeed logged in when I got to the essay. That's a reasonable assumption in this day and age.
Anyway, here's the stripped down comment [I've lost that vital *will to art* :( ]:
Typo: "uncharge" => "upcharge" [I said something clever about this, but I don't feel it anymore]
Question: what's the "small chain" you mention? I thought the multiplexes that chopped up the old palaces and closed the neighborhood places had crushed all resistance. I remember the palace downtown on Oak Street where I saw Star Wars 1 (i.e. IV) - lush! - getting sliced into brutalist movie condos just a short time later.
Stay healthy and keep the good stuff coming!
P.S. Thanks for the tip that the Lucrezia episode of Queens of Infamy was out - I missed it on Twitter. Anne Theriault is one of my all time faves!
