This Week
I’m working on new writing stuff to share, but it won’t be here until next week. I’ll have an essay for paid subscribers about reclaiming a love for horror movies and I’ll have a list of my recommended offbeat horror films currently available to stream on my website. In the meantime, you can read things other people wrote. 👇

“The thing is, therapy does put a lot of stock in narratives. Therapy is mostly stories. It’s rehashing that one time from your childhood, and then that one conversation with your boss, and then trying to make sense of it all through narratives. In that way, superhero therapy, while not perfect for everyone, is a valid way of coming up with better stories for your life.” The value of superhero therapy.
“He threw up his hands
& wrote the universe dont exist
& died to prove it.”
Allen Ginsberg on Jack Kerouac’s death, which happened fifty years ago this past Monday.
A thoughtful, thorough profile of Korean film director Bong Joon-ho. (This is mostly safe from spoilers for Parasite, although if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing, you might want to save it for after you’ve seen that film.)
“He actually spoke and sang in the voice of the lowest of the low, the dregs, the ‘least among us’ – the people looking to follow the first thing that gives them the right to be. He spoke the language of people with nothing but their own humanity, and he elevated them.” Martin Scorsese on Lou Reed.
The Texan history of digital rotoscoping animation.
The story of the ghost who missed out on being included in Disney’s Haunted Mansion: the Squeaky Door Ghost.
Here’s a movie trailer.
Reading/Watching/Listening
I saw Parasite. Another one of those cases where the hype is justified. There isn’t much to say about it except go see it.
I mentioned this last week, but I did finish reading Patti Smith’s Year of the Monkey, and, surprise, it was good. It did morph into something a little more somber as it went along, in keeping with the arc of the year (2016) she was writing about. It ultimately left me feeling that sometimes coming to terms with reality requires a lot of dreaming.
If you’re looking for some good instrumental music to write to/code to/sink into, PJ Harvey released an album of music inspired by the recent stage adaptation of All About Eve.
I’m going to take a nice long walk this weekend. See ya.
Love,
Jen
