“Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future.”
This Week
Friends, I don’t have a lot of news this week, because tomorrow I am going on vacation. I will be eating and drinking my way through Disney World, including opening day of Galaxy’s Edge. So. I got that going for me. This means the newsletter will also be on vacation next week. I will pick back up the first week of September, including the paid subscriber essay. If you’d like to follow along in the meantime, I will be posting photos galore on Twitter and Instagram.

“Feminism has not eradicated the tyranny of the ideal woman but, rather, has entrenched it and made it trickier. These days, it is perhaps even more psychologically seamless than ever for an ordinary woman to spend her life walking toward the idealized mirage of her own self-image.” The tyranny of the ideal woman.
The curse of playing the Wicked Witch of the West.
This story of three women who developed a friendship by all cosplaying Black Widow and supporting each other rather than competing with each other is pretty much everything I love.
There’s yet another previously-lost John Coltrane album coming.
The Popeyes’ chicken sandwich is here to save America. (I ate the sandwich. It is very good.)
“I’d tell him that, sure, maybe solo camping as a woman is somewhat dangerous. But you know what else is dangerous? Going anywhere, every day. And even that isn’t as dangerous as giving in, staying home, letting my life become a collage of other people’s limits and expectations.” On being a woman alone in the woods.
“The best $60 I ever spent: a palm reading that helped me find my way.”
Reading/Watching/Listening
All right, season 2 of Mindhunter (Netflix) is upon us and it’s about time. But it was worth the wait. This is one of the few series I think I might go back and rewatch from the beginning because it’s so subtle and layered. Although I hope we circle back to Holden’s issues in future seasons, because there’s a lot more to explore there.
The American series spawned from What We Do in the Shadows (a movie I am very fond of) is now on Hulu and I found the first season just as funny and weird (in a good way). In Taika and Jermaine we trust. Give it a shot if you were skeptical about adapting the film to a series and if you’ve never seen the film you should do that immediately.
I’ve been busy and distracted lately, so that’s it for this week. As previously mentioned, I’m going on vacation and plan to read all the books.
Go get one last splash out of summer.
Love,
Jen

This weeks’s quote is from Maya Angelou: “Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.”
